Leeks: How to Grow the Perfect "Blanched" White Stem

Leeks: How to Grow the Perfect "Blanched" White Stem

Leeks are the aristocrats of the onion family. Learn the secrets of trenching and hilling to get a long, tender, and snow-white stalk.

Leeks are a true treasure for the winter diet. They are milder than regular onions and retain their vitamins until spring. However, many gardeners are disappointed when they end up with short, tough stems. The secret to success lies in lightβ€”or rather, the absence of it.

Why Does the Stem Turn White?

The most delicious part of the leek is the "blanched" stem. To achieve this, the plant must be deprived of sunlight in the stalk's growth zone. This process is called blanching.

Main Growing Secrets:

  • The Trench Method: Plant seedlings in furrows 15 cm deep. As the plant grows, simply fill the trench with soil.
  • Gradual Hilling: If you planted leeks on flat ground, start hilling them with soil once the stem reaches the thickness of a pencil. Do this every 2 weeks.
  • Watering: Leeks love water. Unlike bulb onions, do not stop watering them even in late summer.

AgroPlanner Tip: Leeks have a very long growing season (up to 200 days). Use our Planner to ensure you reserve space for them for the entire season. Remember, they are great neighbors for carrots but "argue" with beans and peas.
