Broccoli: Secrets of Growing the Healthy Superfood in Your Garden

How to grow the perfect broccoli: moisture requirements, choosing the right soil type, and why this superfood cannot stand being near strawberries.
Broccoli has won the hearts of healthy eating enthusiasts worldwide. It's significantly more nutritious than common cabbage but requires a bit more attention to detail. The main secret to success is the right balance of moisture and light.
Moisture and the "Right" Soil
Unlike drought-tolerant herbs, broccoli is a heavy drinker. It needs fertile soil that holds water well, such as Loam (Type 1). In overly sandy plots, the heads quickly become tough and bitter. Be sure to use our soil type guide: if your soil rolls into a ring easily, itβs a perfect home for broccoli.
Lighting and Coolness
Broccoli loves the sun but panics in extreme heat. If the temperature gets too high, it will bolt into flowers instantly. Our planner will help you find a spot where a tree or fence provides light partial shade during the hottest hours, allowing the plant to form large, juicy heads.
Friends and Enemies of Broccoli
When placing broccoli in AgroPlanner, pay attention to compatibility:
- Friends: Onions, Celery, and aromatic herbs (like thyme). They repel pests with their scent, helping the cabbage grow healthy.
- Enemies: Never plant broccoli near Strawberries. These two crops inhibit each other's growth, leading to a poor harvest for both.
AgroPlanner Tip: Broccoli is a huge "fan" of nitrogen. If you plant it in a bed where peas or beans grew last year, it will grow much more vigorously, as legumes naturally enrich the soil with this element.
