Eggplant: How to Grow the Moody "Purple" King

Secrets to successful eggplant growing: temperature requirements, ideal soil, and who eggplants clash with in the garden. Tips for a bountiful harvest.
Eggplants are a crop for the patient. They adore heat, fear drafts, and demand constant attention to watering. However, if you provide the right "microclimate" and pick the right neighbors, they will reward you with magnificent fruits.
Soil and the Eggplant's "Appetite"
The eggplant is a true gourmet. It needs highly fertile Loams (Type 1) rich in organic matter. It consumes a lot of nitrogen and potassium, so the soil must be prepared in advance. If the soil is too heavy or poor, the eggplant will simply drop its flowers.
Sun and Wind Protection
This plant doesn't just love the sun; it lives by it. Eggplants need a minimum of 8-10 hours of direct light. In our planner, eggplants have a high priority for lighting. Besides sun, wind protection is vital—eggplants are often planted "under cover" of taller crops, like corn, but only if it doesn't block the light.
Neighbors: Friends and Competitors
Eggplants are very sensitive to their surroundings:
- Best Partners: Beans and peas. They enrich the soil with nitrogen, which eggplants love. Thyme is also a good neighbor, as its scent repels certain pests.
- Danger Zone: Keep eggplants away from Fennel. Fennel releases substances that inhibit the growth of most vegetables, and eggplants suffer from it perhaps the most. Our Planner will highlight such a planting in red.
- Conflict: Do not plant eggplants near potatoes. Both belong to the nightshade family, meaning they attract the Colorado potato beetle, which usually picks the eggplant as a "dessert" after the potatoes.
AgroPlanner Tip: Eggplants dislike cold water. Use only settled, warm water for irrigation. In our tool, you can plan a drip irrigation system so the roots always receive moisture without the stress of temperature fluctuations.
