Yucca: The Tropical "Palm" That Braves the Cold

Yucca combines aggressive beauty with incredible resilience. Learn how to induce its two-meter flowering spike, why it craves sun, and how to prep it for winter.
Yucca is an evergreen perennial that adds a Mediterranean flair to any landscape. The most popular species for temperate climates is Yucca filamentosa, which can withstand temperatures down to -20Β°C. It is prized for its dramatic sword-like leaves and magnificent flower spikes that tower over the garden with ivory-white, bell-shaped blooms.
Soil: Where Does Yucca Strike Deep Roots?
Originating from arid regions, Yucca's biggest threat is "wet feet" and water stagnation at the base.
- Best Choice: Poor Sandy soils (Type 2) or rocky well-drained areas.
- Soil Check: Perform the sausage test. If the soil crumbles instantly (Type 2), your Yucca's roots are safe from winter rot.
Best Companions (Good)
- Feather Grass: Provides a soft, moving backdrop for the rigid Yucca. Check our feather grass guide.
- Lavender: Shares identical soil requirements and adds a splash of color.
AgroPlanner Tip: For winter, tie the leaves into a bunch to protect the central bud from snow and rot. In our app, it occupies a 2x2 grid. The system flags the walnut toxic zone in red to ensure your exotic shrub survives.
