Actinidia "Issai": The Mini-Kiwi You Don't Have to Peel

Actinidia is a vine with fruits that taste like premium kiwi with notes of pineapple. Learn what soil it prefers, why cats love it, and how to harvest buckets of berries from one bush.
Actinidia arguta "Issai" is the perfect exotic plant for temperate climates. Unlike classic kiwis, its fruits are smooth-skinned, fuzz-free, and incredibly sweet. This vine can grow up to 4-5 meters, creating a lush green screen on your gazebo or fence.
Soil: Where Does Actinidia Feel Like It's in the Jungle?
Actinidia is a forest vine. It needs loose, humus-rich earth that never fully dries out but doesn't become waterlogged.
- Best Choice: Fertile Loamy soils (Type 1) or Sandy Loams (Type 2) with a slightly acidic pH.
- Soil Check: Perform the sausage test. If the soil rolls into a stick that breaks when forming a ring (Type 1), itβs the ideal structure for root respiration.
Best Companions (Good)
- Strawberries: Provide a great living mulch at the base of the vine. Check our guide on Zenga Zengana strawberries.
- Blackcurrants: They share similar moisture and nutritional requirements.
- Flowers (Clematis): Together they create a stunning vertical floral wall.
Main Enemies (Bad)
- Walnut Trees: The ultimate bad neighbor. Juglone has a suppressing effect on the vine.
- Cats: No joke! Young actinidia shoots smell like catnip to felines. They might dig up roots or gnaw on stems, so protect young plants with a mesh cage.
- Drought: Actinidia's shallow root system dries out quickly, causing fruit drop.
AgroPlanner Tip: Actinidia "Issai" is a vigorous climber. In our app, it occupies a 1x1 grid near a support, but the canopy spreads 2-3 meters wide. The system will alert you if the soil is too alkaline. Always mulch the base to retain moisture, and your garden will feel like the subtropics!
