Beijing Cabbage: Secrets to Juicy Heads and Proper Companionship

Beijing Cabbage: Secrets to Juicy Heads and Proper Companionship

Peking cabbage is a delicate crop that loves cool weather and correct soil. Learn how to avoid bolting and protect your harvest from pests.

Beijing cabbage is gaining popularity for its tenderness and rapid growth. However, many face a common issue: instead of a tight head, the plant bolts and starts blooming. The main secrets lie in the planting timing and soil moisture.

Soil: Where is "Peking" the Queen?

This cabbage has very delicate leaves and needs soil that never fully dries out.

  • Best Choice: Fertile Loamy soils (Type 1) or Clay soils (Type 3).
  • Soil Check: Use the sausage test. If the ring is smooth and crack-free (Type 3), it’s perfect for retaining moisture. On sandy soil (Type 2), the cabbage will overheat and bolt quickly.

Best Bed Buddies (Good)

  • Onions and Garlic: Their sharp scent is the best protection against cabbage flies and flea beetles.
  • Lettuce and Spinach: Great neighbors with similar watering and soil requirements.
  • Mint: The strong minty aroma confuses pests, preventing them from locating the cabbage.

Main Enemies and Taboos (Bad)

  • Tomatoes: They dry out the air and soil too much, causing the cabbage to stress and flower prematurely.
  • Mustard and Radish: Shared Brassicaceae diseases spread instantly between them.

AgroPlanner Tip: Beijing cabbage is a short-day plant. In our app, use the sun zone check: in late spring or summer, try to place it where there is light afternoon shade to prevent overheating.
