Brussels Sprouts Hercules: Harvest Until the First Frosts

The Hercules variety is a classic for those who want to harvest even under the snow. Learn why it fears no frost, how to support the tall stalks, and why it needs so much space.
Brussels Sprouts (Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera) Hercules variety is a high-yielding, late-maturing plant. It forms a sturdy stalk up to 1 meter high, bearing 20-30 dense sprouts. The main advantage of Hercules is its frost resistance: the sprouts actually taste sweeter after the first light frost as sugars accumulate in the tissue.
Soil: Where Does Hercules Gain Its Strength?
This cabbage requires significant nutrients throughout the season. It prefers dense yet fertile soils.
- Best Choice: Fertile Loamy soils (Type 1) with a neutral pH.
- Soil Check: Perform the sausage test. If the soil rolls into a flexible stick (Type 1), itβs perfect: the ground will hold the heavy plant firmly and ensure stable root moisture.
Best Companions (Good)
- Sage and Thyme: Their strong scent deters cabbage moths.
- Onions: Help fight off aphids.
- Spinach: Can be harvested in the rows while the cabbage is still gaining height.
Main Enemies (Bad)
- Walnut Trees: Walnut juglone stunts sprout development, making them loose and bitter.
- Strawberries: Compete for nutrients in the upper soil layer.
- Shade: If Hercules doesn't get at least 6 hours of direct sun, the stalk will be thin and the harvest poor.
AgroPlanner Tip: Hercules Brussels sprouts are real giants. In our app, the plant occupies a 2x2 grid. The system will flag the walnut toxic zone in red and help you plan its location so this tall plant won't overshade smaller neighbors in late summer.
