"California Wonder" Bell Pepper: The Sweet Giant in Your Garden

This variety is the gold standard of sweet peppers. Learn about soil requirements, watering secrets, and how to choose the right companions for a healthy crop.

"California Wonder" is prized for its reliability, yielding excellent harvests in both greenhouses and open soil. The fruits are bell-shaped with walls up to 8mm thick, making it ideal for stuffing and preserving.

Soil: Where Does Pepper Feel Warmest?

Peppers are heat-loving crops that cannot stand "cold feet." Their roots need aeration and quickly warming earth.

  • Best Choice: Fertile Loamy soils (Type 1) or Sandy Loams (Type 2).
  • Soil Check: Use the sausage test. If the soil is sandy and won't form a ring (Type 2), it warms up fast but needs frequent watering. A cracking ring (Type 1) is the sweet spot for nutrition.

Best Companions (Good)

  • Basil: The best friend of peppers. It repels pests and even improves the flavor of the fruit.
  • Onions and Garlic: Protect against fungal diseases and aphids.
  • Carrots: Coexist well in rows, effectively using the garden space.

Main Taboos (Bad)

  • Fennel: An aggressive neighbor that releases toxins inhibiting pepper growth.
  • Walnut: Its toxic zone is lethal for young pepper seedlings.

AgroPlanner Tip: "California Wonder" needs consistent light. In our app, it occupies a 1x1 or 2x2 grid. The Planner will flag proximity to fennel in red. Avoid planting peppers where tomatoes or eggplants grew last year to prevent disease buildup.
