Cucumber Companions: Double Your Yield with Proper Planning

Cucumber Companions: Double Your Yield with Proper Planning

Cucumbers love company, but not just any. Find out who helps cucumbers climb up and who "steals" all the water in the garden bed.

Cucumbers are 95% water, so their main conflicts with neighbors usually arise over moisture and light. However, some plants literally save cucumber vines from heat and disease.

By the way: If you want to learn more about the watering and feeding regime for this crop, check out our detailed cucumber care and watering guide.

Best Friends for Cucumbers (Good)

These plants create the perfect microclimate:

  • Corn and Sunflowers: Act as a "living trellis." Cucumbers happily climb the sturdy stalks, while the large leaves protect them from the scorching sun.
  • Beans and Peas: Enrich the soil with nitrogen, which is critical for the rapid growth of cucumbers.
  • Dill: Attracts beneficial insects that help pollinate cucumber flowers and repels certain pests.
  • Nasturtium: Acts as a trap crop for aphids, saving the main culture.

Cucumber Conflicts (Bad)

Avoid planting near these crops:

  • Potatoes: Cucumbers can catch late blight from potatoes, and both crops compete aggressively for water.
  • Sage and Rosemary: The strong essential oils of these herbs can stunt the growth of cucumber vines.
  • Pumpkin: They share the same diseases, and large pumpkin leaves can simply "smother" the cucumbers.

AgroPlanner Tip: Use our planning tool to place corn on the south side of your cucumbers — this creates the perfect dappled shade for your vines.
