DIY Soil pH Test: Kitchen Magic for Gardeners

DIY Soil pH Test: Kitchen Magic for Gardeners

Not sure why your plants aren't growing? It might be the soil acidity. Run a simple 5-minute test using common kitchen items to find out what your soil needs.

Soil acidity (pH) determines how well plants absorb nutrients. For instance, blueberries love acidic soil, while spinach prefers neutral or slightly alkaline conditions. If you don't have litmus paper, use vinegar and baking soda.

The 5-Minute Home Test

  1. Collect two soil samples from a depth of 10-15 cm.
  2. Alkaline Test: Add vinegar to the first sample. If it fizzes, the soil is alkaline.
  3. Acidic Test: Mix the second sample with water to form a paste and sprinkle baking soda on top. If it fizzes, the soil is acidic.

AgroPlanner Tip: For acidic soil, add wood ash. For alkaline soil, mulch with peat or pine needles. Use our planner to plan your planting!
