Growing Avocado from a Pit: How to Grow Your Own Exotic Tree at Home

Avocado is not just an ingredient for guacamole but a powerful evergreen vine that you can grow right on your windowsill. It’s a long but incredibly rewarding process that starts with a simple pit we usually throw away.

Step 1: The Toothpick Method

This is the most popular way to watch the magic happen. Choose a ripe avocado, carefully remove the pit, and rinse it:

• Insert 3-4 toothpicks around the middle of the pit.
• Place it over a glass of water so the blunt end is submerged by one-third.
• Keep the glass on a sunny windowsill and change the water every 5 days.
• In 2-6 weeks, the pit will crack, and a root will emerge, followed by a sprout.

Step 2: Potting Your Tree

Once the sprout reaches 15 cm, it’s time to plant it. Avocado is very sensitive to soggy soil, so:

• Soil: Loose Loamy soils (Type 1) are best. Be sure to add a thick layer of drainage at the bottom of the pot.
• Planting: Leave the top half of the pit above the soil line — burying it completely can lead to rot.
