Growing Blackberries: How to Tame the Garden's "Black Diamond"

Growing Blackberries: How to Tame the Garden's "Black Diamond"

Dreaming of large, sweet thornless blackberries? Discover the secrets of planting, choosing the right soil, and how our planner helps find the perfect spot for this powerful berry.

Blackberries are a true vitamin treasure that can bear fruit for decades. However, unlike raspberries, they have a much more powerful root system and an aggressive growth habit. Without proper planning, blackberries can quickly turn your tidy garden into an impenetrable thicket.

Soil and Planting Location

Blackberries are quite picky about moisture but cannot tolerate standing water. To get sweet berries rather than sour ones, consider the following:

  • Soil Type: Blackberries adore fertile Loamy soils (Type 1). They require deep drainage. If you're unsure if your soil is too heavy, be sure to take the soil sausage test before planting.
  • Sunlight: This is a critical factor. In the shade, the berries will be small and the shoots weak. In our planner, we recommend placing blackberries along southern-facing fences.
  • Support: Remember that blackberries need a sturdy trellis. It’s not just a bush; it’s a long vine that can reach 3-5 meters.

Friends and "Secret Enemies"

Blackberries have special relationships with their neighbors, which are important to consider when creating a layout in our planner:

  • Best Protection: Plant Marigolds nearby. They protect blackberry roots from harmful nematodes and many beetles.
  • Garlic Tandem: Garlic helps repel anthracnose and aphids from young shoots.
  • Dangerous Neighborhood: Keep blackberries away from raspberries. They share common diseases and pests that migrate very quickly from one bush to another.

AgroPlanner Tip: Since blackberries grow in one spot for 15-20 years, use our planner to calculate their expansion zone in advance. Keep in mind that they can create dense shade, so don't plant low-growing vegetables or strawberries on the northern side of them.
