Peach: Growing Juicy "Sun Fruits" in Your Garden

The peach is the most coveted garden inhabitant. Learn how to choose the right spot, why peaches fear "wet feet," and how to protect your tree from the dreaded leaf curl.
The peach is a tree that requires significant attention but rewards you with incredibly fragrant and juicy fruits. It is one of the most sun-hungry crops: the peach literally "drinks" sunlight to convert it into sugar. Key success factors include proper pruning and fungal protection.
Soil: Where Does the Peach Feel Like It's in Paradise?
Peaches are very picky about soil structure. They need earth that warms up quickly and doesn't hold water at the roots.
- Best Choice: Fertile Sandy soils (Type 2) or light Loamy soils (Type 1).
- Soil Check: Perform the sausage test. If the soil crumbles and holds no shape (Type 2), it's ideal: the roots get maximum oxygen. On heavy clay, peaches often drop their buds and suffer from disease.
Best Companions (Good)
- Garlic: Its phytoncides help protect the tree from bacterial infections. Check out our garlic guide.
- Strawberries: They thrive at the base of peach trees, benefiting from light shade. See our guide on Zenga Zengana strawberries.
- Marigolds: Repel nematodes and other root pests.
Main Enemies (Bad)
- Walnut Trees: The peach is one of the most juglone-sensitive plants. Within a walnut's toxic zone, a peach tree will die within 2-3 seasons.
- Raspberries and Blackberries: Can transmit shared fungal diseases. Keep them at a distance.
- High Ground Water: If the water table is closer than 1.5 meters, the peach won't survive. Perfect drainage is a must.
AgroPlanner Tip: Peaches require heavy annual pruning to prevent tree exhaustion. In our app, it occupies a 4x4 or 5x5 grid. The system will help you correctly calculate the distance from other trees so that the peach doesn't end up in the shade, and will definitely highlight the walnut toxic zone or conflicts with raspberries in red. Remember: peaches need the most sun of any fruit tree, so choose the warmest sector on your map!
