Columnar Apple Tree: Maximum Harvest in Minimum Space

Columnar Apple Tree: Maximum Harvest in Minimum Space

Dreaming of an apple orchard in a small area? Columnar apple trees are the perfect solution. Learn about planting, care, and 1x1 space planning in AgroPlanner.

A traditional apple tree with a wide crown needs a lot of space. But what if you have a small plot? The answer is the columnar apple tree. This tree grows in a single trunk, has almost no side branches, and the fruits ripen directly on the central stem.

Soil: A Strong Foundation

  • Best Choice: Fertile Loamy soils (Type 1) rich in organic matter.
  • Testing: Perform a soil sausage test. If the soil ring cracks slightly (Type 1), your tree will flourish.

Perfect Neighbors (Good)

  • Aromatic Herbs: Basil and lavender at the base repel pests without shading the tree.
  • Mustard: As a green manure, it sanitizes the soil around the trunk.

AgroPlanner Tip: This is our favorite crop for the app! In the Planner, a columnar apple tree takes up only a 1x1 cell (50x50 cm). You can plant a row of these trees with a two-cell interval, and the system will mark it as a perfect layout.
