"Sugar Baby" Watermelon: The Perfect Variety for Small Garden Beds

"Sugar Baby" is a lifesaver for those living in cooler climates. Learn how to get sweet fruits during a short summer, choose the right soil, and find the best companions.
If you've always dreamed of your own watermelons but feared they wouldn't ripen in time, the "Sugar Baby" variety is made for you. This ultra-early variety (75-80 days) features dark green skin and bright red, very sweet flesh. A typical fruit weighs 3-5 kg, perfect for a family treat.
Soil: Where Does Watermelon Get Its Sugar?
Watermelons love "hot" soil. If the roots are cold, the fruit will be sour or the plant will simply stop growing.
- Best Choice: Light Sandy soils (Type 2).
- Soil Check: Perform the sausage test. If the earth crumbles and cannot form any shape (Type 2), it's perfect. Sand warms up quickly in the sun, which is critical for melons.
Best Companions (Good)
- Radish: Planting radishes nearby helps deter cucumber beetles, which carry dangerous viruses for watermelons.
- Corn: Acts as a powerful windbreak. Tall corn on the north side of the bed creates a cozy microclimate.
- Herbs (Dill, Parsley): They don't interfere with the vines and don't compete for moisture.
Main Enemies (Bad)
- Cucumbers and Pumpkins: They share pests and diseases. Planting them together is a guaranteed recipe for powdery mildew.
- Potatoes: They deplete the soil of potassium, which the watermelon needs to develop its sweetness.
AgroPlanner Tip: "Sugar Baby" is more compact than regular watermelons but still needs space. In our app, it occupies a 2x2 grid. The system will alert you if you plant it too close to cucumbers. Always choose the sunniest spot on your planβshade is unacceptable for watermelons.
