How to Get Rid of Ants in the Garden: Safe and Eco-Friendly Methods

How to Get Rid of Ants in the Garden: Safe and Eco-Friendly Methods

Ants spread aphids across cucumbers and trees and destroy plant roots. A complete guide to removing anthills without harsh chemicals.

Garden ants (Formicidae) by themselves are not classic pests β€” they loosen the earth and destroy small larvae. However, in a vegetable bed or berry patch, their presence quickly converts into a catastrophe. The problem is that ants act as the primary shepherds for aphids. They herd aphid colonies onto tender young tree shoots, protect them from ladybugs, and lick off sweet honeydew, ruining your summer garden.

1. Why Chasing Ants Away from Beds in Summer is Vital?

If ants establish a nest near the roots of your delicate crop, for instance, right where your pak choy cabbage or cucumbers grow, the plant will quickly die. They gnaw at root tissues, create underground voids that cause the soil to dry out, and acidify the ground around themselves. A complete cleanup of the plot from their allies is detailed in our cabbage pest control guide.

2. Eco-Friendly Approach: Chasing Them Away Instead of Poisoning the Soil

Using harsh chemical poisons on beds with ripening vegetables is forbidden. Chemicals migrate into the fruits you later eat. It is superior to use natural, sharp-scented repellents that ants absolutely despise, or safe homemade bait traps.

3. Table of Effective Natural and Organic Management Methods (Good)

Remedy / Method How to Apply Correctly in the Garden? What Is the Safety Level of This Method?
Boric Acid with Sugar Mix 5 grams of boric acid, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and a bit of water. Pour into shallow caps near the nest entrance. Ants carry the sweet poison deep into the nest to the queen, completely destroying the anthill in 3-4 days. Safe for plants.
Baking Soda Generously dust dry baking soda directly into a broken anthill and within row spaces. Soda reacts with the acid inside the insects' bodies, forcing them to evacuate the nest immediately.
Mint or Lavender Essential Oil Dilute 20 drops of oil in 1 liter of warm water. Pour along ant trails on currant bushes. An absolutely eco-friendly aromatic barrier that completely shatters the chemical pheromone tracks of the insects.

4. What to Avoid When Eliminating Nests? (Bad)

  • Pouring boiling water in the middle of a bed: Pouring a bucket of boiling water directly onto an anthill located close to the roots of cultivated crops will instantly scald your vegetable roots. This method suits empty garden pathways exclusively.
  • Ignoring aphids: If you eliminate the ants but leave aphids on the foliage, new scout insects will arrive from a neighboring plot within a week to collect sweet syrup again. The battle must be concurrent.
AgroPlanner Tip: The most reliable way to protect fruit trees from ants is installing sticky barrier bands on trunks 30-40 cm above the ground in late spring. Use our planner tool to structure your summer garden protection!
